LEAP 2020 Winner Clare Smith opens her Florist shop in Newhaven

Grand opening for Newhaven Florists, a blooming success!
On 9th October, Town Mayor, Cllr Lesley Boniface officially opened the doors to Clare Smith Floristry, a new shop bringing a modern style of floral design to Newhaven High Street. Located at 12 High Street, the premises has gone full circle with locals remembering it as Harbour Florists many years ago.
Clare started her floristry business in Summer 2019, initially making gift bouquets for friends and family. As the business started to grow, Clare took part in the LEAP Programme, a new business mentoring scheme funded by Lewes District Council – competing with other start-ups to pitch her business plan to a panel of judges. Clare won the competition in summer 2020 and was awarded a grant, which enabled her to build a studio in her garden to work from, and focus on floristry full time. Clare now welcomes the shop as the next exciting chapter for the business.
Clare says, ‘it is a dream come true to have a shop, and having grown up in Newhaven, it is even more special for me to have it on the High Street. Newhaven often gets unfairly criticised, but great things are starting to happen to our town, and I am so happy to be a part of that.’
Clare Smith Floristry is open Tuesday – Saturday, for gift bouquets, wedding and sympathy flowers, plants and gifts, workshops and more. You can visit www.claresmithfloristry.co.uk for more information, or call the shop on 01273 510213.
